Hello,

Is there a way to specify a maximum number of consecutive shifts? I have noticed that the progressive randomizer and the manual selection of shifts both allow residents to be scheduled for numerous consecutive shifts until they reach the total average weekly hours limits or some other limitation or conflict. The Emergency Medicine ACGME requirement VI.E.1.c, however, specifies that EM residents in the ED must have one day off in every 7, not subject to averaging. Our program operationalizes this by not allowing more than 6 consecutive shifts in a row.

Is there a way that I can specify this rule or something similar that complies with the ACGME rule so that I don't end up with violations for too many shifts in a 7 day period?

Thanks!

    Hello Sean,

Yes the Duty Hour rules system only considers averaged days off.

However, to help EM programs the Randomizer with the Progressive Schedules option enabled enforces a maximum of 5 consecutive shifts before giving a day off. That way if you use the Randomizer to make your schedule (as most EM programs do) you have a good compliant starting point.
